Indonesia Receives Full “BRICS” Membership

The Brazilian government has announced that Indonesia has officially joined the BRICS Group of Major Emerging Economies as a full member. The BRICS initially included Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, but has expanded to include other countries including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

Indonesia, the fourth most populous country, has said it wants to join the group as part of efforts to support emerging countries.

The Brazilian Government indicated that Indonesia joins with other members of the Group in supporting the reform of global governance institutions and contributes positively to strengthening cooperation in the Southern Hemisphere.
